Others' Mistakes

Q: I get upset and confused when the people in my life get into trouble. I want to help but don't know how. What is my responsibility?

A: You must never take responsibility for another's mistake. And you must never sentimentally excuse it, any more than you excuse your own mistakes. A false sense of love or loyalty on our part robs the other person of the learning process. Even if the other person refuses to learn the lesson, that is his responsibility. This may seem harsh, but it is an act of compassion. Even Christ refused to take responsibility for those who refused his message.

~ Vernon Howard – The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power

The linked article below from Psychology Today discusses this issue.

  • When we try to rescue other people from the problems they have created, we end up overextending ourselves to the point of frustration.

  • Over time, this becomes a habitual pattern where we ignore our own needs and obligations, and everyone feels resentful of the situation.

  • The other person is probably capable of addressing their own problems and didn’t ask for our intervention.

  • To resolve this dilemma, avoid taking on responsibilities that are not your own.

American philosopher Vernon Howard [1918-1992] saw through the illusion of spiritual suffering in its many forms and showed the world the way to be free.

There is a web site that carries on his work where you can find his audio and written works, as well as sign up for a daily message. Click here.

Howard taught that our minds hold the key that unlocks the secrets of life. Once we discard the wrong ideas we hold about ourselves, we make room for Something Higher to enter.

From the web site: All his teachings center around one grand theme:

There is a way out of the human problem and anyone can find it.
